Ways to help

Volunteer with us

Give your time to help care for the animals at the sanctuary — every extra pair of hands makes a real difference.

What our volunteers do.

Volunteering at Garden Sanctuary is hands-on and close to the animals. Depending on the day and your interests, you might:

Animal care

Feeding, walking, grooming and spending calm time with the animals in our care.

Around the hospital

Helping our team keep kennels, stables and communal areas clean, safe and comfortable.

Welcoming visitors

Supporting reception and helping guests and their animals feel at ease.

Volunteer programmes.

Alongside general volunteering, you can join one of our regular programmes for our shelter dogs:

Dog walking club · new

We are starting a regular dog walking club for our shelter dogs — and we are looking for founding members. Walkers give our dogs exercise, playtime and a break from the kennels. No experience needed, just energy and a love of dogs.

Volunteer dog trainers · new

If you have experience in dog training — or you are studying it — help our dogs learn basic manners and build confidence. Trained dogs are calmer in kennels, easier to handle, and far more likely to find a loving home.

What we ask of you.

  • ✓You are 18 or over (16–17 year olds are welcome with a parent or guardian's written consent).
  • ✓You can commit to a regular slot — even one morning or afternoon a week — so our animals can count on you.
  • ✓You are comfortable around dogs, cats and larger animals, and calm in busy surroundings.
  • ✓No experience is needed. We show you everything you need to know, and our staff supervise all animal handling.
  • ✓You wear closed, sturdy shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
  • ✓You are happy to follow our hygiene and animal-handling rules — they keep both you and the animals safe.
  • ✓Volunteers take part at their own risk and must follow the Centre's safety instructions. All volunteers must sign a liability waiver before beginning.

How to apply.

Please contact our team before coming to the centre. Tell us a little about yourself, the days and times that suit you, and whether you have any experience with animals — we will invite you for a short introductory visit.
